bronze drake

It took me 3 days to earn the 4,250 gold I needed for Artisan-level riding training. But now I can finally fly on my Bronze Drake and my Blue Proto-Drake. Plenty of experts farm gold faster, but I was taking out time to read and work on my latest novel, Pathspace.

bronze drakeThe Blue proto-drake has some minor differences. it has a pointed tail rather than the club tail of the Bronze Drake. The proto also has an underbite. There are a couple of other differences.

bronze drakeThe true drake body is longer, as you can see from these overhead shots. Also, the true drake folds its wings alongside its body when landed, whereas the proto-drake rests its weight partly on its wings, so they are partly spread even when it is not flying.

I never bothered to get the higher level flying before, because I could get anywhere I needed to on my slower griffin and my flying carpet. But after I took the trouble to earn the bronze drake it seemed silly not to be able to show it off to other players. What’s the fun of having a dragon if you can’t ride it into the sky?

Here There Be Dragons…and Carpets

flying carpet2One of the cool things about online games like World of Warcraft is the earned virtual bling. There are certain items in the game that not everybody has, either because they are expensive, are difficult to make, or must be otherwise earned.

This is a shot of my Death Knight “Mattitude” on his Flying Carpet. This was not something I was given or bought. I made it, using material acquired in the game. I had to kill certain humanoids to get netherweave and mine ore to get golden draenite. ¬†Then I ¬†sewed it with eternium thread. Only level 300 tailors can learn how to make these, and only level 300 or higher tailors can ride them.

bronze drakeYesterday I earned another flying mount — the Bronze Drake. It is a bronze-colored dragon You cannot buy it. It cannot be given to you. The only way to get it is to kill an extra monster in a timed Heroic-level quest called The Culling of Stratholme. Yesterday I managed to do that with my paladin Alexanor. I soloed it at the 5-man heroic setting.

blue proto drakeSometimes it takes hard work and luck.Yesterday I also received the blue proto-drake, a blue dragon flying mount. The only way I know of to get it is to kill Skaadi The Ruthless in Uteguarde Pinnacle on the Heroic setting. But he drops this rare mount less than 1% of the time. That means you might have to kill him more than one hundred times to get it! I’ve been killing him for a couple of weeks now on a regular basis. Yesterday I was soloing this quest at the 5-man heroic setting and when he died I received the mount.

And now for the punchline: I cannot ride either of these dragons yet! They require Artisan-level riding skill which will cost me 4,250 gold to acquire. But as you can see from the screen shots, they are waiting in my inventory. So now I am money-grubbing, playing not for leveling or glory, but to acquire game gold to get the training to ride my dragons.

Rocket Man

Thursday, December 12th, 2013

Sometimes you just have to get away from it all. I like to climb on my personal rocket and just blast away into the sky. It’s a two-seater, and a bit of a mystery to me.

I play World of Warcraft, you see, and this rocket is a recruit-a-friend reward. I sent out invitations to friends to join Wow. if any of them accept and play and then sign up for a couple months of game time, I get a reward.

And apparently this happened. A couple of weeks ago I logged in and found I had gotten a reward. I was able to pick from several, and of course I picked the rocket. It doesn’t exactly fit into the overall sword-and-sorcery theme of Warcraft, but it’s cool and you can take a friend along for the ride if you’re on a team.

The mystery is, I don’t know who the friend is who joined and got me this reward! They get a link to join their account to mine so we can summon each other and play together, but no one has contacted me. If you’re out there and you see this, please let me know! I wanted to thank you. I have wanted the rocket for a couple of years.(They discontinued it for a year or so but just recently brought it back — just in time for me to get it.)

One of the cool things about the rocket mount is that it hovers when motionless, even at ground level. This means you can park it with the motor running, or zoom along roads like riding a motorcycle.

Whoever joined so I could get this, thank you!
